Tanning Mom in Rehab

We remember her from her bizarre appearance on television when she was accused of child endangerment, now Patricia Krentcil, the infamous “tanning mom” has checked into a Florida rehab. According to the admission is for alcohol abuse.

Krentcil is 45 and, looking back at her appearances, it seems she has been a drinker for some time. There’s a certain recognizable suite of physical attributes those familiar with alcoholism pick up on. One is the “bar voice” that comes from too much time spent smoking and drinking. Another is how fat gets distributed on the fact, making someone appear much older than they are. But not of this is diagnostic, even considering her often bizarre statements made while on camera.

In a couple of appearances with Dr. Drew Pinsky (noted for his drug treatment skills), Krentcil looked drunk to some viewers. She was also once detained at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport as being “too drunk to fly.”

We should note that Krentcil was cleared of all child endangerment charges. The rumor that she had taken her five-year-old with her in a tanning bed was never proved. And her tanning “addiction” turned out to be as much from applications of body paint as it was time spent in a tanning booth. After cleaning off the body sprays, she wasn’t nearly as dark as she first appeared.

Still, one wonders how much the spotlight turned her even more toward alcohol than before. It is not uncommon for alcoholics to react to life’s stresses by drinking more. After all, one of the reasons to drink is to escape one’s problems. Until, of course, the drinking becomes the primary problem.

There was no information given about her child or who would act as caregiver while Krentcil is in rehab.
