Our Own Little Political Scandal

There’s a principle in psychology called confirmation bias. What it means is we tend to look for things that support what we already believe. When it comes to politicians, the confirmation bias gives more credence to stories about malfeasance and adultery – as long as we are primed to see those things going in.

That little mechanism explains why it seems so many politicians are corrupt or having an affair. Just like with celebrities or sports figures, we notice the bad apples much more than the thousands who are ethical and upstanding. But let’s bring it home. Specifically to Middletown.

A couple of weeks ago, police responded to a complaint from a woman who said she had been thrown out of a motel room. Nothing special so far. She accused the Democratic nominee for Middletown Township Committee. Police investigated and found that Alex DeSevo, who had rented two rooms in the Holmdel Motor Inn, was partying with another woman… and some crack cocaine (alledged).

The candidate was duly arrested on cocaine possession charges and subsequently, his run for the Township Committee was cancelled by Mr. Desevo. The mayor of Middleton commented, “It’s really a sad situation, I hope Mr. DeSevo gets the help that he needs.”

So what does a small town political scandal have to do with what we see in the national newscasts? Well, the shared principle is that underneath all the celebrity, it comes down to one person and the decisions they make. It’s a mistake to think that celebrity or political power makes someone immune. We shouldn’t be surprised that underneath all the PR and wealth, there is just a human being. Just as willful and just as flawed as any of us.
